Everything you need to know about visiting, parking and the maternity services at the Royal Women's Hospital.
Address & contact
Cnr Flemington Road & Grattan Street, Parkville VIC 3052Hospital switchboard: (03) 8345 2000
The Women's sits in the Parkville biomedical precinct, next to the Royal Melbourne Hospital and across the road from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
Public hospital, shared building
The Royal Women's is a public hospital. Frances Perry House, a separate private hospital, operates inside the same building. If mum is a public patient, write "Royal Women's Hospital – Maternity" on your order. If she's private, send to Frances Perry House instead.
Visiting hours
General visiting hours are 2 pm to 8 pm, with two visitors at a time on the maternity wards. Partners of maternity patients can visit outside general visiting hours, and the NICU is open to parents at any time.
Parking
Underground parking is in the Royal Women's main building, entered from Flemington Road and run by Wilson Parking. There are a few 30-minute pick-up and drop-off bays at the Lower Ground level. Spaces fill quickly, and metered street parking nearby is limited.
Public transport
The Metro Tunnel's Parkville station on Grattan Street is a short walk away. Trams run along Flemington Road and Royal Parade, with an accessible tram stop on Royal Parade near the station.
Maternity services
The Women's is Australia's first and leading specialist hospital for women and newborns, and one of the busiest maternity hospitals in the country. It cares for women with straightforward and complex pregnancies from across Victoria.
NICU & Special Care Nursery
The Women's Newborn Intensive Care Unit and Special Care Nursery care for premature and unwell babies, and families can spend weeks there. Parents and their visitors can come at any time, so a gift for the parents can be especially welcome.
Short stays
After an uncomplicated birth, many mums go home within about 24 hours; after a caesarean, the stay is usually up to around three days. Order as soon as you hear the news — and if mum has gone home, call us before dispatch and we'll redirect your gift.
